Marcus Ehning
Marcus started riding at the age of 7. Together with his sister Kerstin, he received riding lessons at the Borken Riding Club. There are still numerous video recordings in the family archive from the beginnings of riding, which show Marcus in E and A jumping on ponies as well as on big horses. Marcus was ambitious right from the start, even if not every ride was immediately successful. He once received a special prize for completing his exam despite falling three times. He quickly learned to adapt to different horses and father Richard made sure that he was trained right from the start.
Narmit, with whom all Ehning children learned to ride, was his first pony and brought him safely to the finish line. Lord, his first big horse gave him enough confidence to successfully ride the first L and M jumping.
With Metaxa, who was particularly close to Marcus' heart, he rode classes A to M. When the mare was almost sold, Marcus put up a candle for the horse every evening and sat sadly in front of it. Father Richard understood the gesture very well and reversed the sale.
Pony Starlight enabled Marcus' first international successes, including two team gold medals at the European Championships in 1990/91. At will he won with Starlight and Queen in 1.30m classes. With his third successful pony, Bright Ruby, he won the German championship in 1991.
Cygan made it possible for him to do his first advanced level show jumping test. Marcus finished the course with two penalties and finally switched to big horses at the age of 16. Orchid, Opium and Talan were the most important horses in the early days. During the five-year junior and young rider period, these three ensured four team gold medals at the European Championships. Especially with opium he delivered exciting jump-offs on rural terrain. With the gelding, he won over 40 jumps, including victory in the “Prize of Nations” and the Grand Prix in Warsaw.
Marcus competed in the first major international tournaments and successes with Costa, Antares and the aforementioned Opium. Since the arrival of For Pleasure at Christmas 1998, the success curve has been straight up.
The successes with Lars Nieberg are certainly still in everyone's memory. Talent for jumping, charisma and character of the Hanoverian stallion make him an exceptional horse.
The first set of Grand Prix horses includes Cornado, Comme Il Faut, Pret a tout and Funky Fred. In addition to the top horses, Marcus also looks after a number of young horses. Up to 10 horses are worked by him every day. In his free time, Marcus plays football with his brother Johannes to balance things out. Not far from the tournament stable, Marcus lives with his wife Nadia and their four children in their own four walls.
